THE BRYN MAWR SCHOOL ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
Middle and Upper School Students

The implementation of a comprehensive computer network at Bryn Mawr School provides access to a broad range of resources and information to the community, but the system also places an enormous responsibility on all users.  This document is intended to explain our policy and clarify our rules.

It is a privilege to have access to the Bryn Mawr network. This policy applies to all Middle and Upper school students when they are using computers or Internet access supplied by Bryn Mawr, whether or not during school hours, and whether or not from the Bryn Mawr campus.

Bryn Mawr School owns all systems, software, email, and other material stored on the network, and retains the right to review any electronic file or communication it deems necessary.

A violation of the Acceptable Use Policy is a violation of the Honor Code.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  Students will maintain the integrity of the school's computer software, computer hardware, peripherals, and electronic mail system.  Each user is personally responsible for all uses and contents of her account.  For this reason, a student must not give out her password or log-in procedures, and may not distribute private information about others or themselves.

2.  Students will use the network in a manner consistent with Bryn Mawr’s standards of behavior. This includes but is not limited to:

  • communicating only in ways that are kind and respectful
  • saving only educational files on the network
  • archiving older files and deleting them from the school’s network
  • using and maintaining in its original form only school purchased or distributed software on the equipment provided by the school
  • keeping all educationally inappropriate materials or files harmful to the integrity of the network from entering the school
  • reporting all violations or threatening or discomforting materials of this Policy to a teacher or network administrator
  • not sending spam, chain letters, or other mass unsolicited mailings
  • acknowledging all copyrighted material correctly

3.  Students will understand that the use of Bryn Mawr email or a Bryn Mawr email address reflects their connection to the community and any misuse of this resource constitutes a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy.

  • Personally owned computers brought on campus are subject to the Acceptable Use Policy and must be registered with the Technology Department prior to their use.

SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The school will provide instruction in the appropriate use of the network
  • The school will educate students about the ethical use of the network and issues of personal safety and privacy.
  • The school will discourage and take steps to prevent access to educationally inappropriate materials.
  • The school will determine consequences for computer and network abuse, which may result in the suspension of a student's account for a period of time and may include further disciplinary action such as financial retribution and up to expulsion and possible legal action.

PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  The parent/guardian will sign the Acceptable Use Policy for the student to gain access to the network and equipment.

2.  The parent/guardian will understand that there are consequences if the student misuses the Bryn Mawr network.

3.  The parent/guardian will acknowledge awareness that there is questionable content on the Internet.
