You should be able to:

• What is the structure of a neuron and how is this structure important to its function?
• Describe the distribution of ions inside and outside of a resting neuron.
• What does an action potential result in?  How does it work?
• What would be the effect if the Na+/K+ pump carried equal numbers of sodium and potassium ions across the plasma membrane?
• What does it mean to say that an action potential is “all or nothing?”  
• What role do neurotransmitters play in cell communication?  
• Discuss how quickly information is passed in the nervous system.  Describe motor neurons and how the myelin sheath allows for speed.
